In this course, students will iterate on a single project starting with sketches, user personas, and outlines. Through the process of user testing and iteration, students will create a highly refined and well-designed virtual reality experience—starting with low-fidelity content and continually improving it based on information from real users. Through the lens of a single application using Unity, user testing, and mobile VR, students will learn about things such as simulator sickness, movement mechanics, audio, user focus, and the overall design process. Once a student has completed the VR Design course, they are ready to create a well-designed VR experience from inception to final product.

  • Learn about best practices for ergonomics in VR
Lesson 3

Set the Scene, and your first user test!

  • Start building a Unity project that will be your design test-case
  • Learn how to adjust the size of a single object relative to themselves for scale
Lesson 4

Graphical User Interfaces

  • Sketch a simple room with two doors and orbs
  • Learn about user testing and feedback
  • Be able to Iterate the size and position of the objects in their scene based on user feedback
Lesson 5

Let’s get moving!

  • Learn about simulator sickness, why it happens, and some strategies to mitigate it
  • Analyze a set of motion mechanics
  • Put a friend into the experience and gauge their reaction, and apply feedback
Lesson 6

Audio goodness, game mechanics, and feedback!

  • Learn how to set up ambient audio, gaze input using game logic, and spatial audio
  • Learn how to incorporate audio into your user testing and apply feedback
Lesson 7

Presenting the work

  • Learn how to properly document all the feedback that you have received throughout the course
  • Make a public post which shows their process work, personas, and final results
