How it Works

This course is taught by key leaders from Alibaba Group and Ant Financial, and it aims to empower leaders from across the private sector (tech leaders, entrepreneurs, SME leaders) and public sector (policy makers, NGOs) to bring financial inclusion to the next billion people.

Admission to the course is through a short application process and free-of-charge for all admitted learners. We’ll review all applications and select recipients to participate in the "FinTech 101: Featuring Alipay" Course. Students have the flexibility to study according to their own schedule, each lesson takes about an hour to complete. Students who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion from Alipay and Udacity, and will stand a chance to participate in future workshops and events organized by Alipay.

This is an introductory course and has no technical prerequisites. In order to succeed, we recommend having experience in technology entrepreneurship.

  • Lesson 2: Alipay’s Financial Inclusion Journey and Flagship Innovations

    Learn about the 15-year tech-enabled financial inclusion journey of Alipay by going through the innovations such as digital payments, 310 model, etc.

  • Lesson 3: BASIC - Pillar Technologies of FinTech

    Overview of key technologies: Blockchain, AI, Security, IoT, Computing, their applications in financial services, and the Future of FinTech.

  • Lesson 4-6: Alipay Innovation Practice

    Take a deep dive into innovations including Alipay, Ant Forest and Yu’E Bao, their enabling factors and technologies behind.

Sabrina joined Alibaba Group in 2000. She was the architect behind Alibaba.com's TrustPass, a product used by hundreds of thousands of SMEs in China to enable trust in e-commerce. In 2012, she joined Alipay as Vice President.

Joined Alipay in 2005, Li Cheng was leading engineering teams in designing and building every generation of Alipay's architecture and infrastructure, and promoting global digital payment and financial inclusion. He took his current position in December 2019.

William Xiong

Senior Director of Technology, Ant Financial

William led the e-Wallets implementation and cooperation in countries including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Ming Chiu

Senior Advisor, Ant Financial Research Institute

Mr. Chiu’s research is focused on global Fintech innovation, global Fintech regulatory policies, and applications of emerging technologies such as Blockchain. Prior to joining Ant Financial, he has 14 years of financial industry experience.

The 10x1000 Tech for Inclusion Program aims to train 1,000 digital technology leaders every year for the next 10 years.


  • What is the "10x1000 Tech for Inclusion Program”?

    The 10x1000 Tech for Inclusion Program was jointly launched by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, and Alipay in 2018. The goal is to help emerging markets cultivate tech leaders to become drivers for advancing digital economic development.

    The program aims to train 1,000 digital technology leaders every year for the next 10 years, a critical effort to enhance human capital for emerging markets.

    As part of the program, Ant Financial partners Udacity in developing the “FinTech 101: Featuring Alipay” online course. This course is taught by key leaders from Alibaba Group and Ant Financial, and discusses how technology can transform the traditional financial sector and bring financial inclusion to billions of people.

  • Who can apply?

    Anyone 18 years of age and above is encouraged to apply.

  • What are the prerequisites?

    There is no specific prerequisite for the course. However, the course content is designed for leaders and future leaders with the capacity to bring financial inclusion to people in emerging markets. Hence, the content may be most suited to those in leadership positions within the technology, business, and public sector domains.

  • What is the program language?

    The program will be taught in English.

  • Where does the program take place?

    The program takes place 100% online. Students can work from wherever they want to, as long as they have a sufficient internet connection to stream videos.

  • When will the results be announced? When do classes start?

    Results of application will be announced every month. Please apply to the program early to receive earlier admission. Classes start immediately upon successful admission to the program. We will release the first lesson on March 26, the rest of the lessons will be released throughout June.

  • Do I need to pay to access this program?

    No, the program is completely free for all admitted learners.

  • Are there specific class hours when students need to be online or can they go through the lessons and study whenever they want?

    Students have the flexibility to study according to their own schedule, each lesson takes about an hour to complete. We recommend learners to set aside time to learn each week in order to finish the course on time. Students will have up to 6 months' access to the course in Udacity‘s Classroom.

    Long Chen: Dr. Chen is the Director of Luohan Academy, the open research platform in Alibaba and Ant Financial. He has designed Lesson 1 to help you gain a deep understanding of the Digital Technology and Inclusive Growth.

    Sabrina Peng: Sabrina is Vice President of Ant Financial. In this course, she is leading the content of lesson 2: Alipay's 15-year tech-enabled financial inclusion journey and flagship innovations.

    Ming Chiu: Ming Chiu is Senior Advisor of Ant Financial Research Institute. He has shared the 15-year tech-enabled financial inclusion journey of Alipay and its innovation in Lesson 2.

    Li Cheng: Li Cheng is the CTO of Alibaba Group. In this course, he is leading the content of Lesson 3: BASIC - Key Technologies of FinTech.

    William XIONG: William is Senior Director of Technology at Ant Financial. He has shared his fintech experience through Lesson 3, giving an overview of key technologies and their applications in financial services, and the Future of FinTech.

    Jerry Wu: Jerry is a life-long learner and has a passion for data and teaching; he has built several courses at Udacity. Currently he is the Learning Products Manager at Udacity. Previously, he is the Curriculum Lead of Udacity's Data School.

    Steven He: Steven is the Curriculum Lead of Udacity's AI School with a multidisciplinary academic background, including math, statistic and computer sciences. Previously, he is an instructor of Udacity’s Machine Learning Nanodegree Program.
